Krejcikova Defeats Paolini in Three Sets
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Barbora Krejcikova, the world No. 32, has won Wimbledon, defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the final on Saturday, July 9th, 2023. This is her second Grand Slam title, having won the French Open in 2021.
Krejcikova is the second-lowest ranked player to secure the Wimbledon Women's Singles title since the WTA Rankings were introduced in 1975. She is also the first Czech woman to win Wimbledon since Petra Kvitova in 2014.
Krejcikova's victory is a major upset, as she was not seeded in the tournament. She defeated No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals and Paolini, who was playing in her first Grand Slam final, in the final.
